They Left Before the Toasts

Dad was having a retirement party. Or we were having one for him. Lots of people were there, including a modern dance troupe of 19-year-olds who turned out to be friends of my brother. Their performance made a real impression, even on the older set from the agency. Someone was MC (possibly my brother)  and had done the math on how many people were going to give toasts and how many minutes they would take–it all added up to roughly 80 or 90 minutes. The MC or someone warned that we really better get going on the toasts because it was close to midnight and people were not going to stay that late.

We looked around to see that many had left or were leaving.
